The Push Towards Sustainability: How to Start Your Journey Today

Sustainability today is synonymous with survivability. If businesses want to survive the coming decades, they need to move away from their current business model and look into how they can be circular and carbon neutral. We are simply running out of resources to exploit, and eventually, that is going to catch up with us, and the businesses that haven’t adapted in advance will not be able to survive.

There are many ways to begin your business’ sustainability journey, with these top tips are a great place to start:

1.    Start the Transition to Renewable Energy Sources

Switching to renewable energy will depend entirely on your location and the space on your property. If you are a small business, you may be able to switch to a renewable energy provider, for example. However, the big benefits that come with switching are more felt by companies that can invest in renewable energy solutions. If you can install solar panels or use wind power to offset your energy costs with your own electricity, you can lower emissions and your utilities all at once.

2.    Replace Inefficient Equipment

While you shouldn’t toss working equipment out the door on principle, you should always be on the lookout for better alternatives. Eventually, your existing system will reach the end of its lifespan, or it will become so expensive to run that it is cheaper to buy a new solution outright. For example, suppose you operate a manufacturing business and need to either replace or expand your number of machine cutters. In that case, you may want to consider waterjet cutters from for a precise, eco-friendly, and cost-effective alternative.

3.    Make Your System Circular

Waste is a huge ecological problem. It also happens to be a huge cost problem. Waste refers to everything that your business discards – including water. The good news is that, once again, being more sustainable can help you either reduce operating costs or help you make an additional revenue stream.

To reduce costs, you will want to reuse as much as possible. A great example is a water. Data server companies, for example, go through an astonishing amount of water. Making that water system to keep your units cool circular, so you reuse the same water over and over again as much as possible, will make a massive impact on your water bill and the water management in your area.

4.    Doing More with Your Waste

Get in touch with other businesses in your area to see if they are interested in buying your scraps and cut-offs at a reduced rate. In many cases, new businesses operating on a circular design principle will be happy to buy sorted raw materials – even the cut-offs.

Properly sorting makes a massive difference for the environment and can also help you clearly identify problem areas in your design process. If there are materials that just cannot be sold on or recycled, it’s time to get them out of your business model.
